About Catherine

Flight nursing came when I was sitting on top of a sand dune in Iraq and I had a thought that there had to be a civilian side to complement the repatriation of soldiers.

When I came home I contacted the Royal college of Nursing for their advice. They assured me that there was a need for Flight Nurses and that there was a specific course held at London South Bank university every year but there were only 16 places available.

I did apply and was expecting a letter to invite me for an interview, to be held in London. That did not happen as expected. I received an unexpected phone call, at work, from the course leader when I was running a very busy acute receiving department and said that I would be happy to chat if he didn’t mind that I would be interrupting our conversation to deal with patient and nursing issues. After our conversation ended the course leader said that he would be delighted to have me on his course for the two weeks. This course was completed and assessments passed.

I use my free time to walk the dog and maintain the vegetable plot. These two activities allow me to destress, reflect on situations, and enjoy life.

27years on and I still love my career. It has taken me to all parts of the world. I have met the most wonderful people who have found themselves in very difficult and emotional situations. Every single day is as unique as the people I meet.
